Hokkaido Shrine
Artistic report

Somewhere in Hokkaido (northern Japan). Firstly, a site of at least 10 km2 needs to be preserved in accordance with the local landscaping regulations. The shrine should only be accessible on foot. It would be situated on a vast esplanade, respecting the topographic relief to the full.

The shrine consists of three elements: a large portal formed by two tall pillars made from the trunks of ordeal trees that support a large iron arch. Inspired by the pagodas of Shinto shrines but adapted to my work.

Centred between the two trunks and at a distance of 75 m stands a 3.5-m-tall piece of Japanese basalt known as Dorokaburi. I fell in love with this stone, which is to be found at the entrance to the studio where Isamu Noguchi worked in Mure Cho (Takamatsu). Eighty-five metres away from the stone, a large iron cone vertically supports another ordeal tree trunk, this one 17 m tall. The cone is not closed and visitors can enter it. It has openings for natural light to enter at the top, through the door and through three small openings, one in the shape of an X, and two holes of different diameters.
